BBFC

The BBFC are the 'British board of film clasification' who are an independant, non- governmental body funded through the fees it charges to those who submit films and video through clasification.

What do the BBFC take ito consideration?

  • Discrimination
  • Drugs
  • Horror
  • Imitable behaviour
  • Language
  • Nudity
  • Sex
  • Theme
  • Violence
Key to each decision is the context in which any of the above are presented.

Some examples that the BBFC have banned in the uk because they are of a worse standard of 18.
  • Human Centipede 2 the full sequence.
  • Grotesc because it had to much level of sexual tortue.

BBFC - How I would classify our film

In line with BBFC Guidelines, I would classify my film as an 18

The reasons for this are:
Imitable behaviour such as the violence and hatred towards someone because of them breaking up with you, the use of language, lots of nudity and sex, and large amounts of violence. this is too much for a 15 so it must be an 18, everything in the film is rather graphic and is unsuitable for younger audiences, so this is why it has been set as an 18.

Storyboard

Our storyboard for the 2 minute film opening:

We have chosen an aerial shot because the pictures will all be scattered on the floor and the best way to show them all is by this shot, we have chosen to have narrating over the pictures.

We choose a close up on the pictures to show that we have gone closer to the photos, to show that the woman's face is scratched out. The sound is narrating over the titles.

The shot is a close up because it shows the emotion in the man's face and the closeness between the two, the sound is narrating to show the closeness also between the two people.

The camera then fades out to a point of view shot on the house that the woman lives in. The music will be non diagetic and will change from narrating to eerie music, to show the mood change.

The camera movement in the clip will be a mid shot because it shows her making a cup of tea and then it shows a close up of the kettle to get the audience ready for the next close up. The sound will be edited in for the kettle and the music will be eerie music.

The man knocks on the door it will be a close up on his hand knocking to emphasise it. the music will be eerie also.

The camera will then go to a wide angle shot, to show that the woman has opened the door to the house. the sound will then stay eerie slightly to show the suspense.

The camera will then go to a close up of the woman's mouth smiling and then cut to his mouth and his smile will turn to a frown. The music will cut of at this point to create suspense.

The camera will go to a low angle on the woman falling with blood on her face, the sound will kick in as she falls in front of the camera.

The camera will then show the woman waking up after being knocked out, this will be a point of view shot, and the music will be muffled and the breathing will be heavy.

The woman face will be shown a close up and she looks to her left and see's dead people then as she looks the camera goes to another point of view shot. The sound will then get louder and the woman will start to move.

The camera will then show the woman crawling into the corner and the music will still be eerie and it will show the fear on the woman's face. Then the camera moves around and the door opens and we hear the sound of it opening and then it cuts to black.

We did have two more but we have decided to remove those for effect, here they are:

The man walks in it shows a long shot and the music is eerie.

Then she screams and the man walks down the stairs and the woman says why are you doing this to me.

Synopsis

The film opens with a man (Dave Nickles) taking a woman and after the title it goes back in time to show why the man is doing this to the woman he has found. Dave walks into his apartment one night to find his girlfriend (Lily Fairfield) cheating on him with what he thought was a good friend. So he plans revenge on the two of them. Whilst shopping at the local supermarket he sees a woman whom resembles the woman he once loved, Lily. He starts talking to her and arranges a ren de vous with her.  So they meet and become close friends but she is letting herself in for more than she can handle. Dave sees a few girls that remind him of the woman he was once heart taken for and they too cant handle whats lurking around the corner. Towards the end there is the woman locked up in a stingy room and she has two limp dead bodies near her. Dave walks in and shuts her up. Soon after we see him walking into another room and lily is locked away within with the good friend and new lover, Ben. As Dave enters to the room holding Lily and Ben captive, Lily stabs Dave in the lungs and leaves the glass in the lung pulsing. Whilst having words with the vulnerable Dave, Lily escapes. She manages to do this as Ben sacrificed himself by allowing Lily to pull the rope tight on him and crush his lungs and loosen the rope to free herself. A true soulmate. s she runs off she says a few lastwords and pulls the glass from the lungs causing lung failure and a gross scene of blood.

Pitch

During our pitch we got mixed opinions of the two pitch's

Pitch 1
  • They thought that the horror idea in the first pitch was unique and was different to any other they had seen.
  • The enigma's that were created were also good they said.
  • The opening i think got a good overeall positive view by the group and that helped our group decide which one were going to do.
I think that our group will end up doing this film idea because the groups overall decision.
Pitch 2
  • They said it was to like other films they had seen.
  • That the two pitches were the same and to close to one another so that they can not be separate films.
  • The pitch was looked at at a different angle because it reminded the group of other films that are out there.
The conclusion
Overall the two were considered to be to similar to be different pitches.
Pitch 1 was the best according to the group so I think we will be going with that one which is good because we wanted to do that one overall.

Watch our pitch and feedback below

horror film analysis

M-Mise en scene

  • CLAMPS
  • C- Costume- The costumes used in the opening scene to make the people in the scene look like thay are going to work the men in suits and the women in business suits and dresses. This creates a buissness type environment quite serious and the woman stood still in the middle of the shot is wearing casual clothes to make her stand out from the group and this creates use to wonder why is she wearing this? it shows she is not in the right environment. All the people in the scene have umbrella's apart from the woman in the middle of the shot who has no umbrella and it is raining already this sets the scene that there is something wrong
  • L- Lighting- is included in M.E.L.C.S.
  • A- Actors- The actors used in the scene are casual and in is set in either China or Japan because all the people are from that type of area this creates the viewer to wonder what is happening because it starts there and then it spreads to the UK further on in the film.
  • M- Make up- The make- up used in the scene is natural because it creates a sense of reality and the woman that has no umbrella is pale the make-up used would have made her look pale because she is different as we find out at the end of the scene.
  • P- Props- There are only umbrella's used as props in the first scene because it is raining which creates a dark suspense for the viewer because its already dim and drury.
  • S- Setting- The setting of the scene is a busy street in the middle of a city centre.
Editing
  • dissolving in and out credits.
Lighting
  • Mainly low key lighting, this creates tension and it tells the viewer that the film will be scary and dark. Shows suspense and tenstion
Camera
  • Close up of the girls face to show emotions and facial expressions, mid close ups too. There is an establishing shot and a zoom at the end to show the the infection is spreading and to show you where it was set. This shows the fear in people who dont want the infection.
Sound
  • There are two types of sound Diagetic and non diageticto start with the diagetic sound there was the rain falling and the woman's attack on the man. The non diagetic sound in this scene was the music which created suspense and this creates tension to the viewer.
Conventions of a good film opening that this film has
  • There are credits to tell us that who the producer is and who will be staring in the film.
  • It leaves us wondering what will happen.
  • It sets the scene and the mood of the scene.
Enigma's that are created
  • What has just happened?
  • How has it happened?
  • Why is it spreading?
  • What is this infection?
  • Where did it start off?
  • What will happen next?

Marketing The Film

I will market my film on the TV with advertisments and trailers, internet website for the film, magazines and newspaper etc.
Magazines people read between the age of 18 and 35,
heat magazine
kerrang!
take a break
auto trader etc.
these interest people because they all have something to do with everyday life and you find things out.

Target Audiences

After reading through the data on film audiences from the UK Film Council, it is obvious that there is a huge market for this genre. Almost one third of film fans (32% - picture 1 - page 105). Along with 15% of film fans who say it's their favourite genre (picture 2 - page 116). The demographic data shows I shoukd be mainly aiming my film at females below 35, at 44% of liking watching this genre. Males over and under 35 like horror films to. But females over 35 do not as much (22%). So my target audience are females under 35 and males over 18.

The Blurb

Our blurb for our film idea:

Join Dave Nickles through his heart weakening story. As the woman he once loved tips him over the edge. He cannot cope with the sight of his past lover and certainly not anyone who resembles her. So goes through desperate measures to make sure 'they' are gone.
