Saving Private Ryan; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZJANhWizUY
Mise - en - scene;
C- Older version of Private Ryan & family: everyday clothes. Soldiers: Army Uniform. Connotations - Army uniform shows soldiers which makes the audience assume that the soldiers are in war.
L- Memorial Ground, Dog green sector: Omaha Beach. Connotations - battle fields show war,
A- Mostly American speakers, but some German soldiers. Respectable soldiers (especially Captain Miller)
M- No makeup.
P- Grave stones, Boats, Religious Necklaces, Water bottles, Guns, Knives. Connotations - Shows some personal items that the soldiers own, and nessessary items for war.
S- Graveyard, Beach.

Camera: midshots showing captain millers facial expressions,subjective point of view shots through captain millers eyes to show how he feels, mid/long shots to show the busyness of the beach while in mid battle, long shot to show battle (eg; shell shock blowing up soldiers on beach), close ups of captain millers hand picking up the blood filled helmet, more closeups of miller's face to show his shocked facial expression,

Sound - Diagetic: Gunfire, screaming, crying, waves hitting the shore, explosions, muffled sound once explosions have gone off
Non Diagetic - no music at first.

Lighting - dark sinister lighting, bright lighting when running around on beach etc.

Editing - Lots of jump shots, slow motion, cutaways from millers blank expressions, slow motion while looking around at the scene in front of himself when on the floor (lots of shots back and forth to show himself then whats in front if him)

Conventions of a good film opening;
Introduction to the setting
The mood and tone is set for the film
The main character is introduced
Draws audience in

Enigma;
Who will die?
Will captain miller die?
What will happen next?
